ByteCubed and NotionTheory Bring AR/VR to NASA’s Renowned Space App Challenge in D.C.

Local tech companies host D.C. chapter of NASA’s annual collaborative scientific exploration of data to problem-solvers across the globe

ARLINGTON, VA — ByteCubed and NotionTheory are thrilled to host a special Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) edition of the NASA Space Apps Challenge Hackathon in Washington, D.C. beginning April 28th. The event will be a part of a global community that is sharing ideas and engaging with NASA’s open data to address real-world problems, on Earth and in space. Co-hosted by ByteCubed and NotionTheory, Space Apps D.C. will take place in ByteCubed’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia and will uniquely focus on how augmented, mixed, and virtual reality can find new ways to visualize and engage with Earth Science data.

This will be the first AR/VR focused Space Apps challenge in D.C. and will bring together the D.C./Maryland/Virginia community as well as attendees from all around the country to tackle challenges using AR/VR, robotics, data visualization, hardware, design and many other specialties. The event’s focus on AR/VR will allow participants to explore uses of AR/VR to experience NASA’s science data & technology in new ways.

“We’re really excited to be hosting a special mixed reality themed hackathon as part of the NASA Space Apps Challenge,” said Jordan Higgins, Creative Director at ByteCubed. “There is a lot of great talent and enthusiasm in the D.C. AR/VR and Data Science communities, and we can’t wait to harness those energies over the course of the three-day event to explore what concepts people come up with.”

NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge is an open innovation incubator and hackathon
that encourages innovation, creativity, and collaborative problem solving. In 2016, the event hosted over 15,000 participants and over 160 events across 6 continents last year. Collectively, over 1,300 projects were produced in response to 25 challenges across six themes including Technology, Aeronautics, Space Station, Solar System, Earth, and Journey to Mars.

“Space is generally regarded as the final frontier and with technologies like augmented and virtual reality, we’re able to satiate this need to explore and bring our imaginative ideas to life in ways we could not have ever fathomed,” said Kristian Bouw, Founder & CEO of NotionTheory. “There’s no better opportunity than Space Apps D.C. for the public to get involved in using emerging technologies to help define the narrative of the future in space travel and exploration.”
